Þ Hammurabi's code-holds people for their actions
Þ About 2350 BC a conquer harmed Sargon defeated the city state of Sumer.
Þ Sargon created the world’s first empire this empire was made up of several nations, people or previous independent states all under the control of just one ruler and all under control by that same leader.
Þ The code lists 282 specific laws dealing with everything that affected the community, including family relations, business conduct, and crime. Although the code applied to everyone, it set different punishments for rich and poor and for men and women.
Þ Hammurabi recognized that a single, uniform code of laws would help to unify the diverse groups within his empire.
Þ Sumerians believed that the souls of the dead went to the "land of no return"
Þ The lowest level of society were the slaves
Þ Most women worked as merchants, farmers, and artisans
